Looking for a Bible Believing Church?
I have always believed in the authority of the Scriptures, and when I began investigating the Orthodox Church, one of my first examinations was of the Orthodox faithfulness to Holy Scripture. Was I ever in for a surprise!
What I found was that the Orthodox Church was more Scriptural than any other Christian body; it believed in the authority of the Apostolic message in Scripture, had spent 2000 years painstakingly preserving that message and was adamant about not changing it. That wasn’t all, however. The Orthodox Church has also preserved the ancient interpretation of the Bible message which provides marvelous insights into Biblical understanding.
For example, did you know that ALL of the eucharistic [the Holy Communion] texts in the New Testament [Mt. 26:26-29, Mk. 14:22-25, Lk. 22:19-20, Jn. 6:48-58, 1 Cor. 10:16, 11:23-29]
mentioned using leavened bread for the service? I always thought that unleavened bread was to be used, but that is not what the Bible says and the Orthodox Church has preserved the correct
interpretation and practice of the New Testament.
Another example is that of salvation. The Orthodox Church does NOT believe in “once saved
always saved,” which is a novel doctrine found in some Protestant circles. The New Testament, in fact, constantly warns Christians about the dangers of taking salvation for granted [Heb. 2:1-2,
4:1, 6:4-6], and virtually any text which mentions salvation by faith [i.e., Eph. 2:8], almost immediately adds a warning about the importance of obedience [Eph. 2:10]. The Orthodox Church has carefully preserved this accurate understanding of the New Testament.
These are only two examples of how the Orthodox Church maintains ancient biblical belief. This Church is more Bible believing than any other body; after all, this is the Church which determined which books are IN the Bible. If you are looking for a Bible believing Church, then the Orthodox Church is for you.
